"Were I called on to define, very briefly, the term Art, I should call it the reproduction of what the Senses perceive in Nature through the veil of the soul." - Edgar Allan Poe

However.... better late than never... there's always tomorrow :)

This weekend is the North River Arts Society's Annual Holiday Show.
Sat/Sun 10-2pm
Artists can submit up to 25 pieces and are encouraged to keep the prices low, so there's lots of wonderful work by local artists on display up there, that are "priced to sell".  Be sure to stop by tomorrow 10-2pm for some great holiday gift ideas.
Here are just a few of my pieces!

I've been working at feverish pitch finishing these four little oils for the South Shore Art Center's "Simple Gifts" small works show.  I had a great time... it was really fun and an enjoyable change of pace painting with oils.
For those of you who are local please take note of the reception at SSAC, 119 Ripley Road, Cohasset on Friday Nov 9th 6-8pm..... there'll be lots of very reasonably priced small works by wonderful local artists.....just in time for the holiday season.  Hope to see some of you there :)

Audubon Annual Farm Day

Painting outside at the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary in Marshfield yesterday started out as a real challenge.  The cloudy sky wasn't a problem but the gusty breeze and the few (and blessedly quick) intermittent rain showers that popped up early in the day, made life interesting, especially for a watercolorist..... I was beginning to wish I'd brought along my oils.  But then the sun popped out around lunchtime, and it turned into one of those gorgeous, blue sky autumn days.
I really enjoyed painting while listening to the band and meeting the many families who stopped by to comment on my progress.  It made for a really fun and rewarding time.  I'm very happy with the results and think I captured the feeling of time and place.... the hots dogs were good too!

Ned Lighthouse and Beached

New watercolors for the Ropewalk Gallery in Mattapoisett.  I love the dreamy atmosphere of these two paintings... so quiet and restful.
I guess that was my mood last week while I was painting and listening to my Norah Jones.

The bidding on all the paintings will start at 7pm
Hope to see you there!

The  North River Arts Association, OTB (Out of the Box) Fundraiser is over and I can now reveal my contribution, an oil painting called "Back Roads"
I tried my best to paint "out of the box" with this little oil which I painted from a photo taken on the back roads in France driving through the countryside to Normandy, a year or so ago.
I really enjoyed painting in oil and have a feeling that this might evolve into an 8"x 8" series from my travels.

If  you're down that way, my paintings are now on display in the Ropewalk Gallery, Mattapoisett, MA

Friday night at the Pembroke Arts Festival was a little exciting with the downpours and thunderstorms going on.  Kudos to the committee and helpers who rushed the paintings from under the Art Tent and into the building... the tent seemed about to go under at one point and there were 6" deep puddles throughout......
Nevertheless, Becky Halekty and her team were able to not only rescue all the paintings, but went ahead with the awards ceremony right on time.  Good show Becky!!!

Here are my two paintings that won Honorable Mention and escaped unharmed...
"Road to Amsterdam" which has now won Three Honorable Mentions this year...WooHoo!
and Sagrada Familia, Barcelona.... Honorable Mention and the first show I've submitted it into.
....I feel blessed!

It's been a  long time since my last post and I've been lucky enough to do some wonderful traveling. Two weeks in China, 900 photos and some sketches, so hopefully I will be posting some China paintings this Fall.

Good news... I just found out that I Won 3rd Place Watercolor in the Duxbury Art Association Summer Show for "Waiting in the Wings".  A painting done from a photograph of a very dear friend's grandaughter that I just had to paint!

'TRUTH ABOUT KERRY"

This post is not about my art this time but about my son, Ian, and his friend Shaun O'Sullivan, Film Maker and President of O'Sullivan Pictures, an LA based production company. Their First Feature Film Release 2012 "Truth About Kerry" is now available on DVD on Amazon.

I'm so proud of Ian, who has been slogging away in LA for over 10 years in a highly competitive field. He was Assistant Producer on this film and did the artwork, posters, trailers and promos.  The film is definitely a work of dedication and the result of many long months of crafting along with his talented friends and co-workers... Brett Davidson VP/Creative Affairs, F.Boke VP/Creative Affairs and Kris Serle, whose song
"I Would Give You It All" on the soundtrack is the winner of
AAA Single of the Year at the Los Angeles Music Awards.
My congratulations to all of you who worked so hard to get this film made.

As in all art endeavors, I'm helping with promotion so please check out the Trailer and re-post... the best promotion is word of mouth and this is a GREAT film..  The star is Stana Katic, the actress in "Castle" on ABC TV.

Check the Links below for Trailer and Music Videos and links to the talented people involved.

Spring Stirrings

Hope some of you can stop by and see Spring Stirrings, a group show with my wonderful watercolor buddies from Plymouth Art Guild.  We get together on Tuesday mornings for painting, fun, chatting, coffee, snacking and even get to finish up our latest projects together. The support, critiques and input are invaluable. We have fun and learn from each other..... Thanks gals!

These are just two of my featured paintings in this exhibit.

"Isles of Shoals"

"Morning Visit"

Venice Morning

I am thrilled to say that my painting Venice Morning has been accepted in the New England Watercolor Society 13th National Open Show at the Attleboro Museum.... Yay!
Venice is one of my all time favorite cities, following close on Florence's heels.  I would visit both again and again.... a painters dream!

An Italian State of Mind...

It must be my longing for a long, hot summer that made me look at my Italian photos again...... I just finished these two watercolors this past week .....

Duomo, Florence
End of Day

Then I decided to try doing one of them in oil for a change.... here's the result..... what do you think
about Oil versus Water..... can an artist consistently do both well or does an affinity for one medium over another influence the result?

Our first real snowy day this winter and my niece was walking her dog early in the morning and, bless her heart, thought of me when she saw this wonderful sky and took a photo with her iphone...... just had to paint it right away!

Happy New Year!

Finally, finally, I'm back in my studio full time..... the dreaded job of putting away christmas decorations is over and done with for another year. Wonderful though the christmas season is it's always great to get back to normal.

I've been working on a painting this week and only got so far and now I'm struggling a bit. I've put my brush down and will take a fresh look in a few days.  In the meantime, I thought you might be interested in seeing how it's coming along.
It's of Sagrada La Familia in Barcelona. I took lots of photos when I was there, over a year ago, and this is done from a couple of different views, incorporating the people and activity in the front of the painting with Gaudi's beautiful cathedral in the background..... you'll have to wait and see how the finished painting looks.... I'll keep you posted :)
